4.74 million Australians over the age of 50 (66% of over 50’s) have osteoporosis, osteopenia or poor bone health

By 2022 it is estimated there will be 6.2 million Australians over 50 with osteoporosis, osteopenia – a frightening 31% increase from 2012

This in turn is expected to lead to a 30% increase in the number of fractures that occur as a result of osteoporosis or osteopenia by 2022. Men account for 30% of these fractures and new studies are showing an increase in the disease in men.

In 2012 the cost of osteoporosis and osteopenia in Australians over 50 was $2.75 Billion. This is expected to rise to $3.8 Billion in 2022.

The total direct and indirect cost of osteoporosis, osteopenia and associated fractures will cost $33.6 Billion over 10 years.

The study recommends that more funding be provided for education and awareness programs about healthy bones as prevention is best, and the high rates of osteopenia are alarming.
